After Paisley’s successes in the late ‘70s - see Part 1 - the early ‘80s merely continued the theme, with Liverpool collecting hordes of silverware, beginning with the 1980 Charity Shield against Arsenal and the first league title of the new decade, as Liverpool held off the challenge of Manchester United to win it by two points.
But the first European Cup campaign of the ‘80s ended at the first hurdle, when after a narrow 2-1 home win against Dinamo Tbilisi, Liverpool suffered a horrible 3-0 away defeat in Georgia. In the one competition that Paisley had not won and would never win, Liverpool reached the semi-final of the FA Cup against Arsenal before losing the 3rd replay at Coventry City’s Highfield Road after a draw at Hillsborough and two draws at Villa Park. Imagine playing three semi-final replays in this day and age!
