After the legs of Bill Shankly’s first great ‘60s team had started to go, he saw the need to build a new dynasty, thee process accelerated by an epoch-ending FA Cup defeat at 2nd Division Watford in 1970.
“After Watford I knew I had to do my job and change the team," recalled Shankly. “It had to be done and if I didn’t do it I was shirking my obligations.
The great strike partnership of that era, Roger Hunt and Ian St.John, which we covered in the first part here, had run its course. A new partnership had to be forged, and just like its predecessor, it was instrumental in a new era of success, with a title and UEFA Cup double in 1972/3 and a second FA Cup in 1974.
