Long before the familiar names of modern-day Liverpool FC, there were others, most involved in earlier title-winning teams, who deserve to join the list of all-time club greats. They are players we as Liverpool supporters should know about. Here are some heroes of the past:
Alex Raisbeck
The club’s first ever superstar may not be a household name now, even amongst Reds fans. But without doubt Alex Raisbeck was the Steven Gerrard of his time, and the pivot in the club’s first two title-winning seasons in 1900/01 and 1905/6.
In those days 2-3-5 was the formation du jour – which made the middle one of the ‘3’ the fulcrum of the team, charged not only with defensive responsibilities but also with instigating attacks, more like a modern midfielder than the position ‘centre-half’ may imply.
One of an illustrious line of great Scots to grace Anfield over the years, the fair-haired Raisbeck was ‘ever prominent with head and feet’ in those two title wins. The Liverpool team was built around him for much of the decade.
